A Career in Leadership and Management by Kerrys Stevenson.
What career did you want to work in when you left school?
I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school, so I took a year out of education to gain some work and life experience before going University the following year to study Events Management.
What was your first experience leadership and management?
I think I always had quite natural leadership qualities throughout education and within my part time working career. My first official leadership role was with Krispy Kreme when I joined them as a Retail Manager to open the first store in Glasgow!
What made you realise leadership was the career for you?
I have always loved a challenge and have had a real drive to succeed ever since I can remember. Leadership provided me with this challenge every day and I thrived upon developing my team to achieve the highest results.
Name 3 great things about working in leadership.
Driving & developing a team, collaboration & building relationships, successfully implementing a vision.
What 3 top tips would you give to someone who wanted a career in leadership
Prepare to work extremely hard & make mistakes – that’s part of the process.
Know your values, be consistent & work for your team.
Develop yourself and your leadership knowledge continuously – there is always more to learn!
How can someone get into leadership and management?
I think the best way is to get as much work experience as possible and show commitment to your employer through passion and dedication to your role. If you’re looking to move up in your current organisation, make sure you communicate this and focus on how you can achieve your short & long term goals. Gaining some experience at the next level is also really helpful – get involved in extra projects, showcase your leadership ability and don’t be afraid to ask those questions that others aren’t!
What roles/ company types can do the leadership and management apprenticeship?
Anyone that is currently in a role where you are leading people / projects / departments can get involved with our apprenticeship programmes. There are options available for various levels and, regardless of your experience, I guarantee that taking steps to enhance your knowledge and development will add value to the way you think, lead, and manage yourself and your team!
